Fresh Start

Two young black men who have entered the fresh start program at the new hope resource center of winston salem

The Fresh Start Program is a rehabilitative initiative designed for first-time offenders of nonviolent crimes for ages 24+. It offers them a chance to prevent incarceration by providing them a chance to rebuild their lives while positively contributing to the community. The program's success is greatly enhanced by its collaborative approach. It works with the Sheriff Department and Detention Center, City Police, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of its participants.  The program focuses on mentorship,  skills training, and counseling, and community service to help participants develop the skills and mindset necessary to reintegrate into society as productive, law-abiding citizens, rather than spending time in the jail or prison systems. Those who complete the 12-month program will have their criminal record expunged and have a fresh start. The Fresh Start Programs occur on-site in the New Hope Resource Center and other partners locations.

Program Benefits:

Reduced Recidivism: The Fresh Start Program is crucial in providing hope for safer communities. By addressing the root causes of criminal behavior, the program significantly reduces the likelihood of re-offending, making our communities more secure. This focus on reducing recidivism is key to the program's mission and impact.

Social Reintegration: The program fosters a sense of responsibility and community among participants, encouraging them to give back through volunteer work and civic engagement, thus enhancing social cohesion.

Cost Savings: By diverting individuals from the traditional justice system, the Fresh Start Program reduces costs associated with incarceration and legal proceedings, allowing those funds to be redirected to other community needs.

Breaking the Cycle of Crime: The program helps participants overcome challenges such as addiction, lack of education, or unemployment, breaking the cycle of crime and preventing future generations from entering the justice system. Fresh Start would collaborate with the DAYMARK, NA AA programs, and other stakeholders.
