"As a single mother, I was juggling bills, childcare, and trying to go back to school. New Hope Resource Center stepped in with support I didn’t even know was available—training, community connections, and even help with food and essentials when times got tough. Because of them, I finished my certification, got a better job, and can provide stability for my children. They gave us hope when we needed it most."
— Tanya R.
"Before coming to New Hope Resource Center, I had been out of work for almost a year and didn’t know where to turn. They helped me get into their workforce development program, connected me with training, and even helped with transportation to interviews. Today, I have a full-time job, I’m able to support my family again, and my confidence is back. New Hope truly gave me a fresh start and a future I can be proud of."
— Marcus J.
"My son made a mistake when he was younger that followed him for years. Through New Hope Resource Center’s expungement clinic and mentoring program, he was able to clear his record and get the guidance he needed to move forward. Today, he’s working in a skilled trade and saving to buy his first car. Our whole family feels like we’ve been given a second chance. New Hope is more than a resource—it’s a lifeline."

Our Insights
The economic disparity in Forsyth County is not just a pressing issue but also an urgent one.
The 2022-2023 academic year saw a high school dropout rate of 13%, which limited economic opportunities for many young individuals [Source: dpi.NC.gov]. The total number of high school dropouts from 2019 through 2023 is estimated at 2,169 students across four school terms. This yearly dropout rate harms workforce readiness. Many individuals lack the basic qualifications required for employment, perpetuating cycles of poverty and unemployment. Two thousand one hundred sixty-nine students, each earning $40,000 per year, could have generated a potential $87 million economic impact for the city through business growth and tax revenue.
Only 31.9% of Forsyth County residents obtain a college degree, leaving a significant portion of the population without the necessary skills and qualifications for stable employment. Less than one-third of residents graduate from college, leaving many individuals with limited career opportunities. [Source: Open Data Network].
Vocational training opportunities in high schools are minimal, and the emphasis on skilled trades has declined, leaving many individuals without the necessary skills to enter these fields. Those in marginalized communities often lack the financial resources or transportation to attend technical colleges.
A SOLUTION.
For more than 25 years, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church has conducted periodic programs
to assist the underserved and marginalized neighborhoods in East Winston-Salem. In 2024, the
church established the New Hope Resource Center (NHRC), a 501(c) (3) organization, to
Implement a more systematic and coordinated approach to confront the economic disparities
caused by low academic performance and inadequate job readiness.
The NHRC is developing strategic programs designed to address these challenges by targeting high school dropouts, unemployed adults, and underemployed individuals seeking improved career prospects.
The NHRC’s mission is to become a central hub in East Winston-Salem for workforce development, training, mentoring, coaching, and community empowerment. The unique and innovative cornerstone of this strategy is the development of a collaborative and synergistic approach with other community stakeholders. The center will address employment barriers and ensure that participants acquire the competencies and resources necessary to thrive in today’s workforce.
