College prep (CP) classes are high school courses that prepare high school students for college-level work. The 2022- 2023 graduation rate for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district was 87%. This startling statistic represents a school dropout rate of 13%, and 63% of high school graduates enrolled in a postsecondary institution. The college graduation rate for Forsyth County is 31. 9 %. Consequently, approximately 37% - 50% of high school students graduate with no practical skill set to develop a life path that could lead to the potential of having a thriving life [ Source: Open Data Network].

 

Furthermore, 54% of high school graduates perform at a proficiency grade level of “C ” or below. Approximately 18% perform at the “D” and “F” levels [Source. Dpi. NC. Gov]. This low academic performance further exacerbates the problem of employment in higher-paying jobs. Therefore, non-college preparatory student graduates often end up in low economic status due to low-paying jobs, unemployment, underemployment, or relying on governmental assistance. There are nominal trade skills and no entrepreneurship training in high schools for students who plan to pursue something other than post-secondary education. Many graduates lack the academic proficiency or desire to apply to postsecondary institutions or technical colleges.
